Education "take a break"?
I had my kids' parent teacher conferences last night. Once again, found something quite disheartening with the "system". A teacher said to me - I'm sure school has been really pretty easy for the last year and a half for your child as your child is very bright...however, now that we're getting closer to 8th grade, we're going to turn up the heat and expect more from them so it will get more difficult". Ummmmm.....What????? Why EVER make it EASY for the bright kids??? They were already on track to do well and needed a challenge compared to the "regular" curriculum. Why in the world give them 1 1/2 years in middle school to skate, get straight A's because they are bright but never pushed, and now after they're "out of practice" of having higher expectations placed on them, start it up again. What a waste of 1 1/2 years of school. Teachers and schools should always push children, of any level to do better. I'm so frustrated.

Interesting.
My kids are still young so I don't know...but in the schools here do they have options for the advanced kids? Gifted reading and math programs or anything? I know the schools I attended always did, even in the younger grades.

cant beleev skools sumtimes
I went to a conference when my daughter was in sixth grade and expressed concern about her spelling. Her teacher told me that she 'would never be a speller. It just comes naturally to some people-but not her, dont sweat the small stuff'. My biggest gripe is that she said it IN FRONT of my child who from then on out didnt even bother trying to spell correctly.
How can you deem someone 'not good' at something in the sixth grade?! how can you not put the effort in? TEACHING is what TEACHERS are supposed to do!!
That being said, I cannot say enough good things about several of the teachers at the same school (WGS) who go above and beyond the call of duty.

Expensive but great.
We broke ourselves sending our kids to Star of the Sea, and it was worth every single penny. If the child's advanced, then the class sizes are small enough so that they can be allowed to flourish. The school is like a family, everyone knows everyone else. Uniforms are a huge plus. It was $440 a month for two kids. I had to get a job to do it, and would do it again. They only get one education.
