-What kind of people will Walmart attract-response
An_onny asks what kind of people will Walmart attract?
Part of her thoughts are in quotes below.
I think Walmart will create low income people. I, too, wish the North Coast would attract higher wage jobs and without closing local businesses like Home Depot did with Papa Jacks.
"I'm certainly not high income myself. But come on. Do we want to attract more low-income people to the area? Look at any town with a Walmart. Super low-income housing starts popping up around it soon after. It becomes known as the trashy side of town. Perhaps solidly middle class types will drive in to shop, but they're certainly not the ones who'll be willing to live right next to one. WHY can't we focus on attracting some REAL companies here who'll provide decent wage jobs and benefits??"

Walmart is not a done deal....yet.
I agree with this completely. I think it would be fantastic if you'd send this into the Friday "Letters to the Editor" column of the Daily Astorian. I might be wrong about this, but I don't think you have to be a subscriber of the paper for them to print your letter.

There's still a chance for local folks to keep Walmart out. Walmart hasn't yet submitted their building plans to the City of Warrenton. Of course, the Warrenton City Commision is drooling all over themselves at the idea of getting a Walmart, but there are still some state-regulated hurtles Walmart has to clear before submitting directly to Warrenton planning. There's a local group that's fighting Walmart. Visit: http://www.c-r-a-w.org/ Citizens should have some say in the way their communities grow. There are things people can do to help keep Walmart out.

Low Income, Trashy People??
How judgemental is that?? I consider myself to be low income because I am a single person trying to survive in an area where housing is extremely high. Have you ever lived on a "single income"? Just because I can't afford high rent or buy my own house doesn't mean I keep what i do have as trashy! There are many higher income family's that live out in the country or out of the city limits who keep their yard and house trashy. Emerald heights is basically a low income housing area and you don't see trash all around it. All you people who look your noses down on people because they don't take home an income as high as yours, well, you know where you can go. And you should pray that someday you don't lose your well paying job and end up having to work 2 jobs just to make the rent like some of us....maybe then you won't be judging people as easily....

But Wal-Mart CREATES the atmosphere that makes people have to work 2 jobs to survive!
Don't you see that? It's a vicious circle. No one who works for them will be able to raise their standard of living. Do we want more of the "working class poor" around here? People that HAVE to live in low income housing and sign their kids up for the free lunch program? I'm not "judging" the poor - I'm hoping this area can attract an industry which will not encourage the growth of this segment of the population. Don't you wish Warrenton would instead try to attract more large coporations that offer GOOD jobs, benefits, and insurance? So that you won't HAVE to relegate yourself to shopping at a store with substandard products?

Not trashy people
the post refers to the side of town not the people.
